Creating A World That Works
PeaceBuilding

“Real Peace will require fundamental transformations of our own thinking, our organizations, and our whole network of institutions. Because of its central place in modern society, business will be at the heart of that metamorphosis – either as part of the problem or as a force for creative change.

Business has become the most powerful institution on the planet. The dominant institution in any society needs to take responsibility for the whole. But business has not had such a tradition. This is a new role, not well understood or accepted. …Every decision that is made, every action that is taken, must be viewed in light of that responsibility.”

Pathways To Peace, PeaceBuilding Through Business,

and Triple Bottom Line for the 21st Century (TBL21)

Overview

The purpose of this document is to show the relationship of these three faces of PeaceBuilding. Since 1983 I have been a part of Pathways To Peace as Director, Vice President and leader of PeaceBuilding Through Business. The time is coming when all people will understand the true nature of peace, and live in a way to create a Culture of Peace.

Pathways To Peace

Pathways To Peace (PTP) is an international PeaceBuilding, Educational and Consulting organization. "Peace", as it is defined by Pathways To Peace, is both an innate state of being and a dynamic, evolutionary process. Peace begins with ourselves, living in harmony with one another, the Earth and all Circles of Life. PTP's operating principle-in-action is:

Acting in concert, we do make a difference in the quality of our lives, our institutions, our environment and our planetary future. Through cooperation, we manifest the essential spirit that unites us amidst our diverse ways.

The mission of Pathways To Peace is threefold:

  • to make Peace a practical reality through local and global projects;
  • to expand communication and build cooperation among existing organizations;
  • to strengthen the United Nations by increasing citizens' participation in its programs.

The mission of Pathways To Peace is accomplished through its projects and consulting services. Current projects which demonstrate the practical aspects of Peace include: "Culture of Peace" Initiative (formerly "We the Peoples" Initiative), PeaceBuilding Through Business and TBL21, Events with Peace Leaders, and PACEM - Pathways Consulting, Educating & Mentoring Programme.

Envisioned in 1945, Pathways To Peace initiated research and development in integrative decision-making in 1962 and began its consulting in the early 1970's. It was incorporated in 1983. Pathways To Peace has Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and works with the U.N. Centre for Human Rights, U.N. Centre for Human Settlements, UNESCO, UNICEF, and other Agencies. It is also an official Peace Messenger of the United Nations. PTP is a tax-exempt, Social Profit, Non-partisan 501(c) (3) Corporation, (tax-exempt I.D. # 68-0015625).

PeaceBuilding Through Business

In 1983, David Wick assisted in the development and launch of Pathways To Peace which became an NGO at the United Nations. On September 17, 1985, while at Stanford University, David led the creation of a symposium focused on the question "What is the relationship between corporations, business and peace?" This powerful and fulfilling experience inspired further meetings at 2-4 times a year. This exploration, which continued for 10 years, became known as the Peace Within Organizations Project under the Pathways To Peace (PTP) umbrella. - Phase 1.

In 1995, as part of World Peace Day, Avon Mattison of Pathways To Peace, and Willis Harman of The Institute of Noetic Sciences, and Director of PTP, launched the PeaceBuilding Inquiry into The 21st Century (PB21). The invited members of this extraordinary five year inquiry were business leaders and planners, educators, writers, community leaders, United Nations officials and governmental leaders.

The focus of the inquiry became "We The People's Initiative: PeaceBuilding Through Business", co-sponsored by PTP and the Fetzer Institute, in association with the World Business Academy. The five year inquiry concluded in October, 2000. David was a key planner and facilitator throughout - Phase 2.

TBL 21

With 15 years of asking the question, “What is the role and responsibility of business in the Century?” with business leaders on the national and international levels, we have launched Phase 3  of PeaceBuilding Through Business (PBTB) in the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon.

As TBL 21 – Triple Bottom Line for the 21st Century, develops as Phase 3 with a focus on the Triple Bottom Line, we will continue to develop the concept and practicality of PeaceBuilding as it relates to the business community, and will assist in the evolutionary step toward taking “responsibility for the whole”. The goal is to clearly identify the strategies, practices, and values that will allow companies to direct their resources, using the PeaceBuilding compass, to provide greater well being and cultures of peace. This focus can be internal to a company, and/or on local, national, and international levels in scope.

The Cultural of Peace Initiative (CPI) -

The Culture of Peace Initiative (formerly "We The Peoples" Initiative) originated in 1983 as a programme of Pathways To Peace by Avon Mattison, Founder and President, and Robert Muller, then Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations. It is a co-operative movement to unite the strengths of existing organizations and projects toward making Peace a practical reality in the 21st century. The annual highlight of this Initiative is the International Day of Peace (Peace Day), which is celebrated worldwide on September 21.

The International Day of Peace – 21 September

The annual highlight day of the Culture of Peace Initiative is the International Day of Peace, September 21. This annual Peace Day marks our personal and planetary progress toward Peace. Peace Day also serves to remind us that our commitment, above all interests or differences of any kind, is to Peace. International Day of Peace (Peace Day), September 21, provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of Peace on a shared date. All over the world, events are being organized to celebrate Peace Day.
